My Husband Is in Rehab… I Had to Idea.?

Question by Beth: my husband is in rehab… I had to idea.?
My husband was admitted to a rehab facility 60 miles away from me on Friday after walking to his unioon representative and telling them he had a problem. I had no idea but he had been taking xanax that was prescribed by a doctor since august, was taking them before that by getting them off the streets and has been on prescription pain killers (i knew that) for about a year but he runs out about 2 weeks early and gets them off the street. He has had an emtional relationship with another woman for the last 2 months through text messaging… all kinds of stuff is coming out now that he is there. I am going to an al-anon meeting locally on thursday but am having a really hard time finding support for people with family members who are abusing narcotic prescription drugs. Does anyone know of any online resources?? I live in Indiana…

How Can I Stop My Family From Abusing Me?

Question by Terese: How can I stop my family from abusing me?
I’m over 50 years old. My brothers are younger than me. My sister is a year older than me. They’re interfering with my life. They’re trying to tell me I shouldn’t see my male friend because he has a “past.” Yes, he HAD a problem with prescription drug addiction. It was over two years ago. He’s been in a program, has been in counseling with me, we’re working things out, we’re practicing Catholics, and his problems stem from a very personal issue in his past having to do with a member of the clergy and abuse. None of my family members know this and it’s NONE of their business. My brothers insist that they don’t want him around the family and that he’s not welcome at any family functions. The ironic thing is that ALL THREE of my siblings have used illegal drugs in their past. I’m the only one who has never touched an illegal substance. What a bunch of hipocrites! My siblings all claim to be CHRISTIANS. Where’s the forgiveness? At what point do you move on–if ever? My boyfriend is devastated by their behavior and extremely angry. I’ve been forced to choose between my family and him, and I’ve chosen him. My mother is the only neutral one, and she’s torn because she feels threatened by my brothers and bullied by my sister, who is her caregiver. What am I to do? I’ve never felt so low, helpless, and hopeless in my life.

How Do You Help an Alcoholic Family Member?

Question by t1g8h81: How do you help an alcoholic family member?
Alcoholism runs in my family. I have a family member who is an alcoholic. She is not in denial and has been in and out of AA for years. She realizes she needs help and is going to enter a 2wk rehab soon. She is the type that hides this disease so well that we never know when she is on or off the wagon. No one would ever guess she has a problem. She is single, lives alone, and has no kids (and so far it has not affected her job) so there is no one to really hold her accountable for her drinking. Recently she told her immediate family/friends that she relapsed several months ago (this even includes her boss). She’s trying everything she knows to get well, and I’d like to help her anyway I can.
