How to Get My Parents to Pay Attention to Ny Education?

Question by Jordan: How to get my parents to pay attention to ny education?
My mom never wanted to push me too hard, so she never pushed me at all. I was highly self-motivated from a young age, but my sisters weren’t. Neither of then have gotten anywhere in life, one trying to attend school at 23 after years of drug abuse, and the other is a senior with a C average. My parents would never quiz us as kids because they were too ‘tired’. They don’t provide me with the basic supplies to do homework and projects. They’re rarely interested in my grades and when I try to talk to them about it, they say they need a cigarette. I’m applying to Exeter now and I’m doing everything myself. I don’t know how much longer I can take it. How can I make them listen?

Unfortunately, it’s unlikely that you will be able to change them. Sometimes parents who have a particularly bright and ambitious child like yourself just aren’t equipped to deal with it. However, you’re right that you could use some guidance and support. I would suggest that you try to develop a mentoring relationship with another adult. This could be a teacher or guidance counselor, but it could also be any adult in your life that has shown an interest, such as an aunt or uncle, grandparent, pastor at your church, community organizer, etc.

Hang in there–your future doesn’t have to be defined by your parents, or your sisters. You are your own person, and you have it within yourself to change your stars.
